Hammer upgrades: recipients, timing and rarity caps

Hammer item artwork from the official release announcement

Quick reference

Hammer raises marked items by one rarity at day end, up to its own rarity. Give its limited marks to equipment below that cap that you intend to keep.

Timing
The upgrade happens when the day ends.
Ceiling
A recipient cannot rise above the Hammer’s own rarity.
Worked example

A Rare Hammer reaches its ceiling

Hammer is Rare. A Common recipient stays in its marks through two day ends.

  1. Hammer item artwork from the official release announcementFirst day end

The Common recipient rises one tier to Uncommon.

  2. Pistol symbolSecond day end

The Uncommon recipient rises to Rare.

  3. Hammer item artwork from the official release announcementNext day end

The recipient is already at the Hammer’s cap, so it stays Rare.

Result

Mark another useful item below the cap, or raise the Hammer’s rarity before expecting further upgrades.

Choose recipients below the cap

Inspect Hammer’s rarity before arranging recipients. A Rare Hammer can raise a Common item to Uncommon on one day and then to Rare on a later day. It cannot take that item onward to Epic without the Hammer itself becoming a higher rarity.

That creates two separate investments: space for today’s recipients and a way to raise the Hammer’s ceiling for future days. Compare the remaining journey with both. Finding a useful Hammer early can leave several upgrade opportunities; finding one just before the final fight provides fewer.

Keep the combat connections

Moving a weapon into Hammer’s marks may pull it away from Yo-Yo, Battery or a damage support. Check the weapon after the move. An overnight upgrade only helps if you can reach day end; leave the working combat arrangement intact when the two positions cannot coexist.

Prefer a recipient you plan to carry across several stops. Upgrading a spare solely to sell it has a different purpose from improving the gun clearing the map. For a build still missing its trigger or receiver, raising an unrelated item’s rarity does not complete that connection.

Hammer and Worth Keeping

Worth Keeping requires taking an item from Common to Super. A low-rarity Hammer is only a partial route because of its ceiling. Keep matching copies and use the merge preview to plan the remaining progression; do not assume a single Common Hammer can finish the objective.

A legendary craft is a separate action from upgrading an existing item. Hammer’s day-end effect should not be substituted for the recipe action required by Tinkerer. The crafting guide explains that distinction before you commit ingredients.
